COVID-19 in South Africa

The COVID-19 or Novel Coronavirus Pandemic has swept the world and South Africa has not been spared, as we are all aware by now.

This disease is mainly believed to spread from person to person through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

These droplets can spread to the mouth, nose, eyes or hands of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

It is VERY IMPORTANT for all of us to take steps to lower the risk of getting infected or of spreading the disease!

6 STEPS TO OBSERVE:

Step 1: Wash your hands often, for a minimum of 20 seconds, with soap and water or use a sanitizer containing at least 70% alcohol.

Step 2: Put distance between yourself and others (Social Distancing). Stay at least 2m away from other people.

Step 3: Avoid close contact with sick people and wear a layered facemask or suitable cloth cover over your nose and mouth.

Step 4: Stay home, specially if you are sick, except to get medical care. If you have severe symptoms please call the COVID-19 National Crisis Helpline at 0860 322 322 or your medical doctor. Do not go to your doctor’s rooms or to hospital without phoning in advance.

Step 5: Cover coughs or sneezes with a tissue or with the inside of your bent elbow and safely immediately dispose of the used tissue into a bin which closes with a lid.

Step 6: Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.

Older adults and people who have severe cronical medical conditions like heart or lung disease, diabetes or high blood pressure are more at risk for more serious illness from COVID-19. This group should consult their medical practitioner for additional steps to stay protected.

Let’s work together to protect ourselves and others from the spread of or contracting the disease.

It is also imperative to abide by the lockdown or other measures stated by Government to stem the spread and the consequences of this pandemic.
